History: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Noctis_Lucis_Caelum#Story
Personality: Noctis isn't your usual kind of prince. He's complicated and ultimately very human, with more layers to him than an onion. At first blush, he might seem like a spoiled brat, a picky eater, and someone who doesn't even bother to do anything for himself. But he is so much more than that; he is one who had to contend with a life-threatening condition in his youth, the heavy burden of being king, his road already set in stone for him. All his life he has worked to live up to expectations and had so often falling short, and in the same vein battling against his destiny, which seems to already be set in stone. He may have accepted his fate, but it's clear that he's not entirely happy about it -- even though there is nothing he can do to thwart it.
His cool and level-headed facade misleads: Noctis is very driven by his emotions, and in many instances can be shown acting much more emotionally rather than logically. He's also secretly extremely shy and awkward, and constantly tries to play it cool: he falls short a lot. His four great loves in life are: sleeping, video games, comic books and fishing, and he gets very enthusiastic about the latter three (see: Assassin's Festival for Noctis' shameless fanboying of the video game). He's also quite fond of showing off his fishing skills, and tends to be quite disgruntled if he doesn't get the attention he wants.
Noctis might be royalty, but he's not given over to putting on airs or pretensions. In fact, he's a pretty easygoing and down-to-earth kind of dude who's very loyal to his friends. He is kind and generous where it counts, and is generally quite sweet, compassionate, caring and protective regardless of that aloof outer shell. Even as a young boy, he was willing to take the blame for Iris and be punished by Regis as a result, just so that she won't be yelled at by Gladio, who can be pretty terrifying when he's mad. He's kind, humble, and pretty friendly when you actually try to get to know him for himself, and not as the crown prince of Lucis (which is the quickest way to turn him off).
In general, he dislikes the rigors of royal protocol; he can never get used to all the bowing and scraping and Your Highnessing, and he much prefers having a life outside of the Citadel where he can at least have a shot at having a normal-ish life. Regis refers to him as his 'wayward son', likely in because Noctis also tends to have a rebellious and irreverent attitude, preferring to do whatever he wants a lot of the time, much to the grief of his friends and retainers. But while he can be a snarky jerk to people sometimes, his heart is always in the right place, and he can always be trusted to do the right thing eventually. He doesn't see himself above people, usually tends to treat people of a lower station than he is with decency and respect even if he can be an ass to his friends sometimes.
As a student at a public school, he did his best to keep a low profile -- he loathes showing off his status and is evidently uncomfortable with the attention he gets anyway for being royalty, as can be seen when he walks away from the adoring masses who bombard him with questions about his life in the Citadel. Nonetheless, he's brilliant enough to top his class; and he was described by his classmates as a gentle, well-groomed, well-mannered young man who loves animals, and who is very committed to community service, i.e. helping people out (this trait can also be seen in-game, when he helps people out with what they need no matter what they offer him). He still loves animals as an adult; caring for the cats that he meets along his journey, and very happily hugging chocobos whenever he has a chance.
While he avoids people who flock to him just because of his status, it can be seen in his earliest interactions with a very young Prompto that he doesn't actually care whether you're an outcast/loner/weirdo or not. His only friends for the longest time had been Ignis, and later Prompto. He's witty, sharp, but also very accepting and inclusive (see: his friendship with Prompto), even though he can be quite reserved and withdrawn at first blush, a natural consequence of being attacked at a young age by a daemon sent by the Nifleheim Empire (Marilith), which caused his attendants to be killed, and himself lapsing into a coma.
As a result of his royal upbringing, his outwardly withdrawn and reserved front, Noctis has been alone and relatively isolated most of his life. Which of course leads to him developing an inability to express his emotions, as well as a fear of losing people close to him. As a counterbalance to that, Noctis has also developed a desire to please, to want to strive to meet expectations even if he has plenty of weaknesses of his own -- namely his penchant for self-doubt and his many moments of uncertainty and fear, which is pretty normal for a 20 year old grappling with the weight of his destiny and responsilities.
When he has to travel incognito during the game, he's very at ease with not being recognised, and is willing to do all manner of odd jobs for people who ask it of him. His royal status doesn't matter much to him; in all truth, he probably sees it as more a hassle than anything else.
It must be noted that despite his kindness and warmth, Noctis is prone to mood swings, a general sense of ennui, and has a grumpy streak a mile wide. He can also be snappy and mean when he's upset, and this can be seen in quite a few scenes, from the farewell scene with his father to when Prompto asks about Luna, or when Ignis updates him about the state of Lucis, as well as Regis' weakening condition. Noctis tends to lash out when he's distressed, preferring to avoid the difficult subjects and bottle up his feelings until they spill over, much to the chagrin of the people who care for him. One of the latest examples is the way he deals with Luna's death and Ignis' injury -- he handles it badly, retreating into himself without a heed for others; he carries with him a powerful sense of survivor's guilt, and it's obvious in the way he talks and finally breaks down.
Noctis is irreversibly changed after his father dies, as well as the events of Altissia. He becomes more self-deprecating, angrier (lashing out at his father for sacrificing everything just to save him) and clearly blames himself for Luna's death. He also has a vicious, violent and ruthless streak with a thirst for vengeance, (as can be seen when he comments that Nifleheim will wish they had a ceasefire to protect them, before pretty much ripping through an entire horde of Nifleheim soldiers to return to Insomnia), which is pretty warranted when you consider that his father had been killed and his home destroyed. Another example of this is when he's more than eager to kill Ardyn on sight after the events that transpired in Altissia --also for good reason, since Ardyn was the one who killed Luna.
Even then, it's obvious that he's continuing to grow into himself and to mature into a king that his father can be proud of. Slowly but surely, he's following in his father's footsteps -- despite the fact that they don't spend much time together, Noctis is mature enough to understand that his father's duty is to his people.
Despite faltering and his self-doubt along the journey, Noctis emerges a stronger albeit more sober character. He has always been a courageous soul, with an innate nobility, poise and polish borne of his station, a prince who has been groomed to succeed Regis as the future king. While he still tends to be reckless, willful and headstrong, Noctis starts to demonstrate a gravitas as he moves on from his grief to start to be the king that the people need. He takes on his duty with dignity and resolve, bravely and selflessly, and understands that he has to move forward no matter what, accepting the consequences and to do what's right, not what's easy.
There's a harder road for him that lies just ahead -- Noctis himself isn't quite there yet, but one day he will be.
Inventory: His Amiger Arsenal, clothes on his back, and a little carbuncle figurine in his pocket.
Abilities: In summary:
Noctis is able to wield the power of kings: i.e.e wielding a whole lot of weapons at once (Armiger); these weapons were ones his ancestors used, and crystallise from thin air for his use. This power is shared with his closest friends (i.e. Ignis, Prompto, Gladio), and they're able to access these weapons as well. Noctis is also able to warp long and short distances, phase through solids, as well as teleport. In addition, he's able to craft spells, collect elemental powers from his environment, and convert normal items i.e. sodas, etc into healing potions, elixirs and the like. Noctis is also the ringbearer of Ring of the Lucii, able to tap on the power of the Crystal itself in exchange for the user's own life force. He's also able to call forth on Astrals like Titan, Leviathan, Shiva etc to aid him
Flaws: Noctis has a bit of an inflated ego, can be a bit of a jerk, and he tends to be mean when he's upset, is pretty self-absorbed when he's suffering/in pain and unable to deal with this feelings. The dude also does love to sleep a lot, too.
